Not sure on dmv laws in Utah but you would definitely need an address to use not sure if that can be different then your license when you insure it would be in Utah address all starenentsctaxes etc would go there. I did something similar years ago but every state probably has different requirements. Lots of people out by me do it for tax reasons etc but it’s risky .

I am sure a lot of people end up buying a vehicle in a lower tax state including registering it in that state. It does have its risks and Utah may even ask questions.

So I can speak because I live in OR where there’s no sales tax, although we do get raped on income and property taxes because the money has to come from somewhere. I also lived in Los Angeles for a few years and wanted to buy a car in OR for the same reason as you. You’ll have to “set up” residency in the state you’re buying the vehicle. If you go to UT with a CA license, they will charge you CA sales tax. So, your best bet is to use a friends address and open an online bank account with your friend’s address because you’re going to have to show proof of residency when applying for a UT license. It’s going to be a process and will probably require two trips to UT, one to get license and the other to purchase the truck, unless you can whack both in one trip. Go the DMV in CA and say you lost your license so they issue you a new one. Take old license to UT and surrender it when applying for a UT license which you will need to purchase vehicle. Now when/if you do get the car in UT, it’s important that you play dumb if you ever get pulled over in CA, use your UT license and say you’re visiting because CA law requires you to register a vehicle within 30 days of moving there. It’s a lot of work but if it’ll save you $20k, it’s well worth it.

Buy cars on the regular, once the car is brought over state line where u live and registered your hit with your states tax. Sure u can list it at your friends house but your lic. has to change to that addy and insurance, pain in the ass in my opinion to save some loot, then your taxes will be all screwed up to cause of your lic. They will catch up to you trust me, been there did that. Best way to buy a car is find out when the manufacture has there big incentives, I saved almost 30k on my last purchase so I’m ahead of the trade in value.

It doesn't matter where you buy the vehicle. If you register (get the tag) in California, you will pay California taxes. There's really no way around it. If you don't pay them, they probably won't give you a tag and then the CA dept of revenue will know and hold your tax return until you pay it.

I buy cars out of state quite often. It's no big deal to find a better deal outside of you region, buy the vehicle and be proud to come home and pay your taxes (you know they use them correctly lol).

Sorry for the late reply, I just joined this site. I've been selling Porsche for 25 years. You must pay tax and title for the state where it will be registered, and the Dealer must do it if you are financing. The only way to pay lower tax is to have a Driver license in the other state, so you must have a residence there to do that. I sell a lot of cars in different states all over the country every month. Sorry.
