I'm 35 and squandered away too many years doing stupid shit, partying too much, etc.

Now that I'm sober and clear minded, I am trying to better myself and set up the best future possible. I am thinking of majoring in either psychology, journalism/writing, or philosophy.

I have actually completed a good amount of collegiate units at JC and am maybe 4-5 classes away from being able to transfer to a University.

Can somebody point me on exactly what steps I need to take to do this?

Is it as simple as going back to my old JC and asking to speak with a counselor and having them pull my transcripts?

I am also open to the idea of different fields/industries if some of you more successful gentleman have ideas.

Thank you.

That’s awesome bro, yeah I would say speak to a counselor there. I’m assuming it’s an accredited school so most colleges will accept the transfer of credits. But the counselor should be able to help with that. To me go in the direction of what you enjoy. Money is cool but not if your miserable everyday earning it. I was leaning towards being a doctor like the old man or business because it came pretty easy. I chose business because I was to lazy to go through all the schooling. I do decent money wise but if I could go back I would have busted my ass to be a doctor.

Sorry for the long write up but again I’d go for what you enjoy. Best of luck bro

Do it...! I was talking about that today with my daughter.

I have the Equivalent of 2 associate degrees, but no paper in hand, I'm going back a class at a time , I figure 6-8
Classes more & I could Garner 2 degrees.

Albeit, they aren't going to put me into a promotion, or more $$ { I do just fine there } with 25 years corporate seniority, it would just be personal achievement for me.

That’s awesome man it’s a great accomplishment one that no one can take away from you. I hear you on the corporate seniority thing but still with the sense of accomplishment

Depending on how many courses you completed, and what your goals are, you can either go back to the college you were enrolled in and wrap up there, or contact any other university and ask about transferring those credits. Most colleges will take most, of not all, community college credits.

You can speak the counselors or advisors at either those institutions and they will help you set up a plan as well.

make sure to ask as many questions as you need as it can sometimes be overwhelming to go back.

First contact the university that you want to transfer to. Some jc credits dont transfer or it takes level 1 and 2 to equal level 1 in a traditional college. Also by now you meed to have a pretty good idea what you want to major in. You dont have the luxury of freshman and sophomore yrs to decide and you wanna graduate with the least amt of debt because its gonna take many yrs to pay it off. Be thinking about how youre gonna support yourself as well. You only spend about 12 hrs at school in class but about 20 doing homework and research papers. It is a full time job. It is extremely hard to work fulltime and attend school fulltime. Goodluck i did the same thing. Worked for 8 yrs then went back to school and got a ba in business mgmt. Best decision i ever made.

I have no idea what university I would want to transfer to... Is it far fetched to want to go to school out of state at this point?

I understand it's not gonna be easy, but I have like zero distractions at this point in my life. Pretty much no friends, my living situation makes it impossible to be involved with females, I don't do anything for recreation except work out. Just care about getting my life on track.

You can go anywhere you want. Although instate colleges offer discounts whereas outstate ones will be more expensive. I would start thinking about where you want to go tho. Most colleges require the same "basics". You need to find out which jc credits transfer. I spent almost 2 yrs doing generals at community college before i talked to a university counselor. I found out 1/3 of my credits didnt transfer so i wasted time and money. Thats why its important. Idk where you are in ur education but those things need to be decided. School is very expensive these days

I made sure every class i took at the time was transferrable at least to a state uni.

I'm about 15 units away from transferring... Thats maybe like 4-5 classes.

If you’re going to go out of state consider moving permanently and establishing residency to get the lower rate. Just have to find out how long you need to live there before you qualify as it Varies state to state.

Nows the time man. Sounds like you got the drive. A move to a new state might be just what you need. Before I had kids I would move every couple years, even if just to a new city. It was like a purge.

That's right, i didnt even think of that... Ya idk if i would move and live out of state for a year for school at this point.

Hey bro! I would figure out what major and school you want to transfer to first. Then get a copy of their curriculum online. Talk with your counselor at junior college to see what classes you need to line up to the 4 year transfer degree. They can make sure you get all your math science English and other classes completed at junior college. Out of state tuition can be pricey. A lot of times you have had to live in the new state for 12 months to establish residency to qualify for in state. Depending on what you are majoring in, a lot of programs are now offered fully online as well. I would just look for a state school that is accredited. Feel free to message me man! I do this for a living!

Bo58 great advice. I’m about half way done with my masters and it’s time consuming. Make sure you talk to someone know what your getting yourself into with respect to cost, online/ self pace, transfer credits, and how use your degree after you graduate.

Good for you taking the first step towards your future. That little piece of paper has made me a shit load of money. Best decision of my life. I wish you well brother!

Those are horrible majors.
If you want to improve your life/income/get a job, learn something that people need. Go to a trade school, or become an accountant, agricultural scientist, or something useful.

Agreed..! { Not so much on the Majors , if that's what appeals to an individual , that's fine. But I hear what your saying }

I've Always maintained that if a person doesn't want to do a traditional job , or follow in another's footsteps for instance ,& doing their own thing is Kool..

A cliche , or credo if you will, I've often cited is this...

" If you want to be a trash hauler, riding in the back of a garbage truck because it has you outside, with the wind
(Hopefully not downwind of the trash however ), and the
Sun is on your back, not your eyes ...!

So be it..., I understand.. , as long as it makes one happy
& provides you, your loved ones what you's need .

*** I also believe we should all learn something new

Pick a degree that's a in high demand and also that pays good. Do some research before you choose a degree..
