Well, the landlord dropped a little bomb on me, saying the house would likely go on the market soon. (Just specific enough to be stressful, just vague enough to be annoying.)

I have absolutely no idea or plan or preference about where I'd go. It could be across the street, it could be across the country. So what's the job and housing market like in YOUR town?

mine is high as hell, massachusetts. everyone is mortgage poor here. small house %200,000 and higher

We're keeping an eye on the Carolinas where houses larger than our current one can be bought for about a sixth of the price. Plus I have friends and siblings down there, so I'd have a small network already in place. But that's just one option.

Jersey. 325000 for a 4 bedroom ranch in what's considered the mountain area (hour or so outside of nyc). But you can find similar for 225 or so

Where I'm from originally is 20 min outside nyc (direct suburb and shopping capital of the god damn state) goes for ludicrous amounts. 400,000+ for a 3 bedroom ranch. But low taxes because of malls.

My dad's 2 bedroom ranch gets offers all the time in the 400 range. It's crazy.

Here in this Southern Oregon area is a housing crisis not much open at all. Even lucky just to find a storage unit and they are all over the place. It's a big retirement community around here also a large medical practice. For the size of the area there are lots of providers.
Makes finding work easy but housing near impossible and the pricing of properties and rentals even for junk is ridiculous.

Yep, same up here in the Central OR area... Not sure why this has become such a "destination" for so many people, but prices keep going up because people moving up here are willing to pay.
